Title: Filtration
Description: "Filtration" was a piece I made to explore the parallels between aquatic life and the human body. Sea sponges are vital to the ocean due to their ability to effectively filter out pollutants, like pesticides, in the water thus contributing to the preservation of ocean water. Though sea sponges can grow to be quite large, a small, four inch tall sea sponge can filter 23 quarts of water in just one day. My piece explored the shared purpose of filtration the human nose and aquatic sea sponge share. The human nose filters all the air that enters the body before it reaches the lungs. Any potential pollutants to the respiratory tract are trapped by tiny hairs in the nostril called cilia. The nose plays a vital role in ensuring the air entering the body is free from any impurities, such as pollution, viruses, bacteria, and debris amongst other things. By bringing together the human nose and sea sponge in one piece, I sought to showcase the similarity in their physiology though they come from seemingly different worlds.
