Title: Amadeus
Description: In this piece, I wanted to capture the powerful energy and expression within a wolf's snarl, particularly because of the contrasting texture between the wrinkles on the snout and the thick, flowing fur around its face and chest. Though the teeth were excruciatingly laborious, I was able to learn a lot about the mouth anatomy of a wolf, and enjoy the created resulting desire to look into the mouth and see molars in the very back. Art is meant to intrigue the viewer and spark interaction, and this was my goal- to draw observers in because of the desire to see the piece from every angle as each perspective reveals something different, or to close the eyes and feel the sharpness of each tooth and the sinuous movement from the nose outward to the tips of the fur. The results from the woodfire process at the East Creek anagama are perfect for the interaction between fire and sculpture. Animal forms have contours that the ash can flow around and melt on, accentuating features like the fur and eyes with the soft variation of flashing and ash settlement. As a side note, I chose to name the wolf "Amadeus" because I enjoy playing classical piano, and since Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's name conveniently contained "wolf", I picked his wickedly cool middle name as the name for my piece.
