Title: Look To The Stars
Description: Red Earthenware, Acrylic. This ceramic sculpture was inspired by an alter ego assignment presented in class. An alter ego is another version of myself. For my alter ego I represented myself as an astronaut, symbolizing the part of me that is interested in astronomy and the possibility of worlds beyond Earth, an interest that is not overtly recognized by people who do not know me. The basic form was created with slabs over a paper armature in order to allow me to quickly create a hollow and lighter form. I then added and subtracted clay to create details like the wrinkles, hollowing tubing and patches. After the piece was bisque fired, I painted the surface using brush techniques learned in my painting class. My favorite part of my sculpture is the cover of the helmet, which is meant to reflect distant stars and galaxies as I look up into space.
