Title: | Crab Mentality |
Description: | This piece, “Crab Mentality”, is named after the behavior of crabs trapped in a bucket. During the situation of a crab trying to escape the bucket, another crab is expected to pull the other back down into the bucket, ruining the progress made. This behavior is a metaphor for the selfish concept of, “If I can’t succeed, then nobody else should be able to”. The larger hand in the middle being dragged down by the smaller hands reflects the idea of crabs in a bucket selfishly pulling each other down rather than raising each other up. For the larger hand, two different colors of clay were used in a nerikomi fashion to create a marbled affect. E6000 Plus adhesive was applied on the surface of the larger hand, creating the shiny appearance. Alternating colors were used for the smaller hands that surround the larger hand. |
