Title: Pearl
Description: I have always found the ocean fascinating. Out of all the organisms that lie within, I find the oyster and pearl to be the most inspiring. The oyster appears ordinary at first glance, yet it has the ability to turn unwanted particles into extraordinary pearls. For my final high school piece, I decided to integrate all the skills I have developed over the years to represent the oyster in the most challenging, functional form to master: the tea set. Like the oyster, a tea set does not impress with its large size; its beauty comes from within the time devoted to its development, its delicacy, and its functionality. After numerous broken pieces and piles of imperfect teacups, I created sphere-shaped vessels that mimic the oyster with carved waves to represent the ocean it came from. I made each component using natural materials: porcelaneous clay I threw into vessels, powders I mixed into Sam’s Satin Celadon Glaze, wood I turned and carved into teaspoons and rings, a tree stump I ground and sanded into the shell, and metal rods I forged and welded into handles. This piece symbolizes the oyster's ability to utilize the materials available and transform them into something beautiful.
