Title: | The Hall of Fame (As I Will it to Be) |
Description: | Who gets celebrated and who gets to decide? For as long as I can remember it has been men who dominate the history books. Their achievements line the figurative hall of fame that we call the collective consciousness. We remember James Watson and Francis Crick as scientific geniuses, but not Rosalind Franklin who originally discovered DNA's double helix. We idolize F Scott Fitzgerald for his ingenious works of literature, but not his wife Zelda whose diaries he took inspiration from and in some cases directly copied. This piece “The Hall of Fame (As I Will it to Be)” is a response to the age old pattern of solely celebrating men. The surface design includes numerous portraits of my personal female role models. These women include people like my mother, my grandmother, Amanda Gorman, Greta Thunberg, and Taylor Swift just to name a few. Their portraits are gilded in gold and their names written below. Towards the bottom of the vase I've painted portraits of myself throughout different stages of my life. The final portrait is left blank representing my future and the accomplishments not yet achieved. Grecian Aesthetics are also heavily incorporated into the vase, like the wavy borders and even the vase's form itself. I do this because Greek and Roman art are some of the most recognized and celebrated periods of history. These so-called “Classics” have cultural capital and influence. With this piece I attempt to change the narrative and put the people I love and look up to into the spotlight. |
