| Description: | While most people during this project focused on the famous and widely recognized parts of gothic architecture, I decided to explore the smaller and lesser-known parts of the gothic culture that are not recognized as much by the majority. Instead of looking at famous cathedrals or intricate stained-glass windows, I studied things that still carry the essence of gothic design but they showed it on a more in depth scale. During this process, I found gothic-style chess pieces, which stood out to me because these pieces incorporated gothic characteristics in small and detailed forms. They use carved faces, sharp angles, and dramatic shadowing to show the intensity and design of larger architectural works. This finding shaped the idea behind my piece. I wanted to show gothic detail not through buildings or stained glass designs, but through the conversion of their architectural details and parts into facial features shown on the chess piece. My goal was to merge the design and detail of gothic design with the emotions and expressions of the human face. The sharp angles on cathedrals and churches inspired the sharpness and bold details in the face, but the depth and soft details on those churches influenced details like the eyes and the creases in the forehead. The solemn expression on the piece is meant to symbolize the dark and slightly mysterious feeling of the cathedrals. My main idea was to show that gothic architecture does not have to be a large structure. The chess piece’s gothic detail can be also seen to show the human form, and creates a piece that is both architectural and expressive in a new, more mysterious way. |
