Title: | Rusty Coils |
Description: | Many students at this level have no knowledge in sculpture or Ceramics. This is an intro level assignment, where students focus on technique, the use of tools, and the difference between glaze and underglaze. This particular student created this piece using coil construction. She wanted to incorporate another material, metal. The handles you see are rusted steel. She had to understand the shrinkage of clay in order to use the rings. She later created small testers for Cone 5 glazes, layering a variety and recording their chemical reactions together. She wanted to keep the 'rusted' and metallic component with the layered glazes, but wanted a splotch of red to break it up. That is where you see the red dots located in the shiny area near the rim. |
