Title: Ripoff China
Description: In our advanced/highest level ceramics class, we are required to create many different projects using a variety of techniques (wheel throwing, coils, slabs, etc.). Half of the projects are off of the wheel. One of those pieces was to make a vessel with a lid. Instead of creating a simple jar or container, I decided to put a twist on the project. I created an abstract non-functional, teapot. Going one step further by doing a bubble underglaze technique using the color “Electric Blue” by Amaco. When the piece was done in its final glaze fire, the color had darkened and created a nice balance of white to blue. As I looked at the final product longer, the colors had reminded me of Blue Bone China dish sets. That is why the name suits the piece because I only used a low fire white clay and blue underglaze instead of bone china porcelain and the blue delicate designs.
