Title: | Peace of the Woods |
Description: | I chose a deer because I believe they represent peace and nature, having a younger deer or a doe helped the piece have a sense of innocence and youth. To start the baby doe i started with two balls of identical clay, then formed a head and neck from the two combined pieces. I started chipping away slowly shaping the head of the deer. I had to analyze deer anatomy, from the way their skull was structures, to the way each section of hair laid its self over the head. After getting a basic shape and understanding i went and carved out a spot for the eyes. During this I also added onto my clay piece where some extra fur was going to be. Once the head was constructed I cut the piece in half at the nose and began to hallow it out for firing. Once the deer head was put back together I began the with details and the ears. I used different types of sharp tools to create deep hair lines to bring the deer to life. I constructed both ears by flattening some oval clay into a concave ear shape, then I added details into the inside of the ear while attaching it to the head. After it was fired i started on the painting. I new i wanted to start with a light brown color. I continuously mixed dark and light brown and whiite colors together with a bit of water to slowly layer light to dark, the parts of the deer colorization. I went over the head multiple times adding darker and lighter spots and details to things like the individual hair strands or detailing on the nose and ears. The deer extremely fun to examine and create from what was just a vision. I call this piece Peace of the woods, a sort of play on words from it being a piece of artwork, but also a part of the woods that represents more then just an animal. |
