Title: | Haetae |
Description: | This sculpture is my own interpretation of the creature Haetae. It is my favorite mythical creature in Korean folklore. He is sent by the sun itself. It is the definition of good, knowing right from wrong and judging people and avenging the needy. The body is shaped like a lion, the mane like clouds, with scales on the body, it has a fierce look to scare away bad spirits that try to enter the kingdom or homes. A stone statue of it often stands at the gates of an ancient palace, at either side of the gates. They are also placed at the front of the capitol building, promoting peace and wellness of our country. I’ve seen these statues often since I lived in Seoul, South Korea most of my life. |
