Title: Birds and the Beach
Description: Hand-built vessel decorated with underglaze and glaze. Taking inspiration from the diverse wildlife that inhabits the outer banks, my vase depicts the bird and plant species that exist along the coast. Using sgraffito, I decorated the vase with texture and lined designs, emphasizing the movement of birds above the water. At the base of the vase, I used small line drawings to depict sandpipers as they fill the shoreline. The rest of the piece is covered with larger images of herons and cranes. Using the contrast between glaze and exposed clay, I considered the size and graceful movement of each bird's image, hoping to capture their movement in the air. While making this piece, I considered my childhood spent at the beach, watching the tide as birds flew above and walked along the shore. Filling every surface different texture or type of bird, I drew inspiration from the ever-changing environment along the coast, with each corner an opportunity to discover something new. Hand-built sculptural vessel decorated with underglaze and glaze.
