| Description: | Juxtaposing Eastern art and symbols with Western cowboy boots, this trompe l’oeil sculpture comments on the commodification and to an extent appropriation of East Asian culture. Common Asian symbols in American society include the serpent-like zodiacal dragon and Chinese characters, used constantly in tattoos to packaging to graphic tee designs. On the other hand, leather cowboy boots have become a staple in any urban fashionista’s wardrobe, ultimately stripping them of their original use on rural ranches. These paralleled disconnections between the contemporary function and historical and cultural significance of such artwork and garments demonstrates the facade that is “mainstream Asia” within America. |
