| Description: | This piece's name is in tagalog and means "very beautiful & how ugly" in english. My interpretation of this piece is to illustrate my personal experience of being a Filipina-American girl trying to fit into both Filipina and American beauty standards (which is an impossible feat). The sculpture is actually slightly modeled after me, and shows a distressed expression as she looks to the side, really exemplifying the feeling of insecurity that I've felt for most of my life. The fragmented pieces of a second face are all meant to represent the standards that I, along with many Southeast-Asian girls, conform to: pale skin, big eyes, high nose bridge, etc. Since all the pieces are unable to fit together, the project literally shows how beauty standards are unattainable and can't be achieved. |
