Title: | Garden Vase |
Description: | Objective: Design and create a two sided vase using slabs which they have embossed, carved, and or embellished with clay elements. Students will begin by cutting two slabs of equal size and shape, and a narrower strip which will form the bottom. They will design and apply most of the surface decoration: impressed patterns, designs, applied clay elements etc. before the slabs are assembled, and are still flat on paper covered ware boards. Any applied clay pieces will be joined with slip and score techniques. Though the sides must mirror each other to be joined, the top edge can be cut or carved in many ways to create a more interesting form. The two slab sides will be slipped and scored on the inside vertical edges, joined together, stood upright, and the sides separated in the middle to form the desired shape. Students will place the now shaped form on a third narrow slab, trace the outline, cut to fit, slip and score all joining surfaces, then attach to form the bottom. After the vase is bisque fired, the students will return to apply glaze to their pieces to finish their projects. |
