Title: | The Chalice of Gunmar |
Description: | This decorative goblet is a classic piece pulled from the recesses of my childhood imaginings. I was inspired mainly by the fantastical journeys of medieval folklore, and the adventurous quests of classic fantasy literature. For example the overall design of a chalice was based on the goblet of fire from J. K. Rowling's book " Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". As for the dragon claw, my idea originated from my many childhood dreams of being a royal adventurer and fearless dragon hunter, similar to those found in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The chalice was handbuilt using slabs and coils, first starting with a simple cup and slowly attaching the handle, base, and finally the claws. To accentuate the texture of the reaching dragon's claw I used combinations of complimentary colored underglazes and high fire glazes to truly show the majesty and power of such a creature. To add to the value of such a piece while it looks cool, it is still a usable cup for any occasion. |
