Title: Biophilia-Natural Textiles-Sheep
Description: The idea of Natural Textiles and its accompanying piece Plotted Journeys, is to connect people back to our earth through the idea of communing with nature. This piece is sheep depicted in a wool suit, made from clay, with a surface treatment of acrylic paint and real cotton. I’ve always thought the planet and our resources are deeply connected to us, and I’ve tried to create space in my life to take care of it and spend time with it. I find when I express my thoughts to others, they often look at me sideways, and I feel this expresses the country's general lack of concern as a whole. Often the gifts nature brings us, we take wholly and selfishly, misunderstand the relationship with our planet. As yeast is in bread, yeast feasts on sugars in the bread to grow, and it is not food shortage that kills the yeast, but rather their own waste that overwhelms them. My pieces represent the gifts that give us our lives, that are usually grappled at without a second thought. These resources keep us running, keep us alive, and need to be cherished. I tried to communicate climate change and anthropogenic impact through a different lense. I want to shed light on these resources and the important role they play in our world, so that with awareness, we can alter our path as the human race. The idea of this piece is to speak to the textiles we derive from natural sources. We use natural fibers provided by our planet for protection, style, and warmth. These fibers are often purchased off the rack, with no thought, and are discarded just as easily, adding to waste, and misuse of resources.
