For the past 24 years I have called San Bernardino my second home, as I have dedicated myself to fostering a love for the arts in the community. This love for the Arts came from wonderful opportunities that I experienced at a young age in elementary and high school. Working with caring and nurturing teachers, a passion was ignited in me to follow the rewarding path of becoming an Art teacher. I attended CSU San Bernardino for my undergraduate Visual Art degree and my teaching credential. My teaching career began at San Bernardino High School in 1996, where I developed a successful career pathway in Graphic Design. In 2000, I was hired as an adjunct Professor of Art at CSUSB and currently instruct both pre-service elementary teachers and single-subject Art credential students. In 2001, when Arroyo Valley High School was being planned as a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet, I was asked to transfer and develop the programs for the Art department. I have been Department Chair for 18 years at AVHS. In 2008, I returned to CSU San Bernardino to re-stoke my creativity and completed a Masters Degree in Visual Art with a Sculpture Concentration. I was awarded Outstanding Graduate Student of the year in the Department of Art. My daily teaching responsibilities include introductory Sculpture and Ceramics classes, advanced Ceramics classes, and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. Teaching this wide variety of course levels requires strong self-management and the ability to communicate clearly to my students about expectations of the curriculum. The classes all offer amazing opportunities for critical thinking and creativity for my students, as well as myself, as they take the journey to becoming an artist. Leading the Art Department at AVHS for so many years has helped me develop strong leadership skills, as I have had many opportunities to collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, and staff. Building successful Art programs and events for nearly two decades has required responsible decision-making and the ability to build trusting relationships. Balancing teaching in SBCUSD, teaching at CSUSB, leading the VAPA department , and being a father of three has taught me the value efficient self-management and the awareness to make healthy decisions to balance work and life.
